- Shift marketing focus from shoppers to referral sources.
- Build relationships with professionals serving the 55+ community.
- Utilize your local Chamber of Commerce proactively.
- Educate others to clarify estate sale processes and benefits.
- Establish credibility through service and community involvement.
Recently, I partnered with my local Chamber of Commerce and another business owner to establish a Senior Business Council—a group of Chamber members whose services support people over 55 and their families. The council brings together professionals from industries such as senior living, real estate, estate planning, financial services, healthcare, moving, downsizing, and estate sales.
This is what out-of-the-box marketing looks like. Estate sale companies often focus most of their marketing on shoppers by posting sale photos, advertising upcoming events, and building social media followings. That is important, but shoppers are not necessarily the people who hire us.
Future estate sale clients are often downsizing, moving into senior living, settling a family member’s estate, or preparing a home for sale. During that process, they may speak with a Realtor, attorney, senior-living professional, financial advisor, or moving company before they ever contact an estate sale operator. Building relationships with these professionals helps position you as the person they call when a client needs liquidation guidance.
Become the Estate Sale Expert in Your City
When estate sale services come up in your community, you want people to think of you. That happens when you consistently demonstrate your knowledge, professionalism, and understanding of the challenges families face.
A Senior Business Council provides opportunities to educate other professionals about how estate sales work, help families plan realistic timelines, correct common misconceptions about liquidation, and connect people with trustworthy resources. Over time, you become more than another business owner asking for referrals. You become the local estate sale expert other professionals call when they need guidance.
The strongest referral relationships are built through service, credibility, and community involvement—not constant sales pitches. Offer to provide educational programs, create resources for families preparing to downsize, participate in community events, or help other professionals understand how estate sales fit into a larger transition plan. When people experience your expertise firsthand, referrals develop naturally.
Start With Your Chamber of Commerce
If you are not already a member of your local Chamber of Commerce, join it. Chamber membership can connect you with Realtors, attorneys, senior-living professionals, movers, healthcare providers, and other business owners who regularly encounter families needing estate sale services.
Simply joining is not enough. Attend events, participate in committees, build genuine relationships, and look for ways to contribute. If your Chamber does not already have a group focused on the over-55 community, consider proposing one. The goal is to become an active and trusted member of your local business community so people remember you when an estate sale need arises.
Think Beyond the Next Sale
This is the kind of marketing strategies taught in the Marketing and Client Acquisition for Estate Sale Operators course from the Institute for Estate Sale Professionals. The course goes beyond advertising upcoming sales. It teaches operators how to understand their clients, build professional referral relationships, use educational content, and create local marketing opportunities that generate qualified leads.
Some of the best marketing opportunities are not opportunities you find—they are opportunities you help create. Build relationships, educate your community, and become the estate sale professional your city already trusts before someone needs to hire you.
